Edit 4/24/09: SB 79 is dead for this legislative session. See also http://stopbsl.com/2009/04/24/hawaii-proposed-pit-bull-ban-looks-dead/
Crossposted from BSL Updates:
SB79 was referred to the Judicial Government and Operations (JGO) Committee yesterday (January 26, 2009). As you are probably already aware, SB79 would ban the ownership of “pit bulls” in the state of Hawaii.
Please send your POLITE AND RESPECTFUL opposition to breed specific legislation to the members of the the JGO Committee listed below.

Once again, I cannot stress how important it is to maintain professional and polite communications with all officials. Negative communications can and do hurt both us and our our dogs.

Email senhanabusa@Capitol.hawaii.govAt this time, correspondence should be limited to members of the JGO Committee and Ms. Hanabusa only. It is far too early to flood the entire Hawaii Senate with opposition. If the proposed bill happens to make it out of committee, we will then proceed to contact all the members of the Senate at that time.

How sad dogs and owners can’t enjoy exercise in a normal way anymore. People on the beach have yelled at and cussed about my American Bulldog in front of my 5 year old. Dogs help humans emotionally and may lenghthen lives. How about punishing owners, instead of the MANY nice, innocent dogs that are currently considered for banning in HI, and not in parks and on trails alone – entirely? Two strange ladies actually took my picture while I was walking my dog (he looks like the “Homeward Bound” dog). They said he is a bad dog that needs banning, then they peeled out fast away from me, and SWERVED while I was alone on my neighborhood sidewalk. You all have bigger fights to concern yourself with between vehicle accidents and health issues, than to judge all dogs and owners, and what may occur with them. The numbers of bad dog incidents sound horrible, until you compare them to good dogs. The most aggressive breeds I’ve known have never been talked about for banning in HI – German Sheppards, Chows, Chihuhuas, Dobermans, and the MEANEST I ever came across – Weenie dogs and a GOLDEN RETRIEVER/ LAB mix physically hurt me more than any other. I empathize with people, and I agree something needs to be done about the many owners in HI raising fighting dogs.
does anybody know when they will make the final decision on this?
Why are you guys doing this? I oppose of this law. Do not pass it! Why is it that only pitbulls are being banned? There are so many other breeds of dogs that bite and are ferocious. What about the other breeds? What are you going to do about them? Pitbulls are not the problem, try looking at their owners. Pets are a reflection of their owners. Like they say, “Punish the deed, NOT the breed!” I have had so much pitbulls over the course of 15 years, and none of them bit anyone. They may bark and growl at people they do not know, but they won’t bite. They were all so friendly and loving, and all they wanted to do was play. So what’s the problem? If this bill is passed, then what are you going to do with all of the pitbulls that people already own? Kill them, put them to sleep? That is cruelty to animals!!! Please think twice about this. What I am saying is the truth. Pitbulls are not the only dog breeds that bite. You should reconsider what you guys are doing!
None of your must live in fear of just going to your house the way I do since I have to cross my neighbors door stoop along with at least two of her four Pitbulls. Two of them went for me last week, thank God this time it was not too bad, some marks on my ankle and a ripped up dress. The owner of the dogs never even appoligized. This is my only way in and out of my house which sits on the same property. After having asked the owner several times to please put her dogs someplace else so I can feel alittle safer, she still doesn’t. For sure hers need to be taken away. The police nor the Humane Society seem to be able to do anything about it either. What am I suppose to do?
same goes for me i own a blue nose and she gets licked by a silky terrior so what does that say. its the owners fault
Kathy, if your question is an honest one and not rhetorical–I don’t think you’re calling the right people and saying the right things. You have marks on your ankle, a torn-up dress, and a legitimate complaint about aggressive dogs. Your dangerous dog laws should come into play. Call animal control and tell them what’s going on. If they “can’t do anything about it,” find out why. I fail to see what the dogs’ breed/appearance has to do with this at all. If the dogs were Dalmatians, would you be pushing for a ban on Dalmatians?
PUNISH THE DEED, NOT THE BREED!
