A brief discussion, stemming from the Public Safety Committee report, was held about how to treat pit bull and pit bull cross dogs in Hot Springs. Councilman Ray Ecoffey, the Public Safety chair and Animal Control Officer Dave Green noted that there are ordinances in Sturgis and Newell which require that pit bull owners carry additional liability insurance. Green said that recently a pit bull attacked another dog and a horse. “There is more than $1,000 damage to the dog,” he said, “plus the cost to put the animal down.”

Councilman David Burris questioned if it was possible to have something in place to the effect of repeat offenders could have their pet ownership taken away. Green said it would be difficult to show enough cause to take away someone’s animal.
