Toledo, OH: “Pit bull” adoption approved by Humane Society

A small step forward, but state law complicates matters significantly. The Humane Society will only allow two “pit bulls” for adoption at any one time, and adopting one of these dogs costs more, takes more time, and comes with extra steps and requirements.

Reversing a policy in place for many years, the Toledo Area Humane Society (TAHS) has decided to begin adopting out pit bulls.

Garfield, NJ: Ordinance would make new requirements for Garfield “pit bull” owners

Update 4/26: Thanks to Jodi and Barb for this information. The city council has been receiving a lot of negative feedback about the proposed BSL. They will not be voting on the ordinance during the April 27 meeting. The vote is scheduled for May 11, and the proposal may no longer be breed-specific by then. I will update as I hear more.

New Jersey state law prohibits BSL. The ordinance will be voted on and may pass at the next city council meeting: April 27, 8:00 PM at City Hall.

Man proposes pit bull ban

April 19, 2010 5:38 PM
Diane Turbyfill

MOUNT HOLLY — [... Todd] Young addressed Mount Holly City Council recently to propose a ban of pit bulls in the city limits.

[...] City Council will review the information submitted by Young. Planning and zoning could get involved if the issue moves forward. Jackson said he would also consult with the county about how such a restriction could be enforced.

“There’s just so much more involved with it,” said Jackson. “We’re going to look into it as fully as we can before a final decision is made.”

Brampton, Ontario, Canada: Dogs freed, ruled not “pit bulls”

Previous alerts about Brampton: http://stopbsl.com/?s=brampton

The sad part is that despite the ruling that these dogs are not “pit bulls,” despite no complaints from the public about the dogs, and despite the city’s own veterinarian saying the dogs are friendly, the city has still designated both dogs “potentially dangerous.” Why?

This is a city that cannot lose gracefully and admit they were wrong.

[...] An independent veterinarian has ruled Brittany and Rambo are not pitbulls, which means after 97 days in the pound, the two dogs are finally home.

[...] Despite the vet’s ruling, as part of the agreement with the city, the owners had to agree to allow the dogs to be designated “potentially dangerous” and they must wear muzzles when out in public.

Finally, an Elkhart animal ordinance

For months, the city of Elkhart has been grappling with animal control issues – many of them related to pit bulls. After all that time, the Elkhart Common Council will vote on an ordinance Monday night.

Still, the ordinance doesn’t mention pit bulls – and it doesn’t ban any specific breed of animals.

Eupora, MS: BSL passed (multiple breeds)

Previous alert for Eupora: http://stopbsl.com/?s=eupora

The article doesn’t provide many details regarding the ordinance passed last week. However, unless significant amendments were made to the proposed ordinance since I last spoke with the city clerk a few hours before the council meeting, it contains language that regulates and/or bans the ownership of SEVERAL breeds of dogs. To my knowledge and per the city clerk, the only amendment to the ordinance on April 5 was with respect to the insurance requirement. The breed specific language had not been removed.

[...] Mayor Lawrence Yule wants banned dogs put down based on their appearance and without proof of being a danger, as happens in Britain.

The pit bull terrier, Japanese tosa, dogo Argentino, and fila Braziliero breeds are all on Britain’s list of banned breeds.

[...] Acknowledging that New Zealand law does not allow such a move, Yule says the government will be lobbied to follow Britain’s example.
